You should receive info to your email or phone, and then you can log back into your account with a security code. Then, you can change your Instagram password. Some hackers hold accounts ransom, and will request some form of payment in order for them to return the account to the rightful owner. If this happens to you, then you need to report this to Instagram. You’ll be asked to verify your identity, so be prepared to send over documents or event take a video selfie of yourself. Be warned that it could take weeks before you finally regain access to your account.

What If You Believe Someone Is Attempting To Hack Your Account

There are several red flags that may be signs that your Instagram accounts have been hacked or that someone is attempting to hack you. The main signs including receiving a email with instructions to change your password (which you didn’t request) or receiving an email change request form. Another red flag is you start seeing posts appear on your page that you actually didn’t post yourself. Then you can change the details and phone number.

Actions To Take If Instagram Noticed Suspicious Activity On Your Account

Instagram will email you if someone tries to resets your password. If you receive such a notification, then you should take action right away. The last thing you want to do is nothing at all because serious problems could end up arising at some point.

If you receive an password change email, but you didn’t request it in the first place, then this is a bad sign. It means someone might be attempting to hack your account. You’ll want to report this incident to Instagram, and then you’ll want to change your password immediately to stop the account being hacked or having the account disabled.

If you didn’t make any kind of request, but you still have received an email from asking you about changing your contact info associated with your account, then click on the “secure my account” link. If you can’t reach the login page, then your password might have already been changed. Don’t worry though because you can still request a security code or you can request a login link.

Some emails appear to be legit and from Instagram, but in reality they can be scams and/or phishing attempts from hackers and scammers. META does have a function that is designed to protect you and your account. Instagram has a security section within its app, and you can click on that if you want to see what emails you have been sent by Instagram over the last two weeks. Check this section from time to time to see if you are receiving legitimate emails from Instagram.

Other kind of messages can be used for phishing. This includes Instagram DMs. WhatsApp chats is another way scammers can try to steal passwords and info.

What If There’s Suspicious Activity On Your Instagram Account

If you are noticing posts you didn’t post yourself, but you are actually in your account, then your account is probably hacked. It is important to change your password right away because this will boot the hacker from your account. Check to see which devices are logged into your account, and log out of any devices you don’t recognize or that you find suspicious.

Furthermore, there may be third-party apps that might have been compromised. Revoke access from such apps. This is because these apps that have been breached may expose info related to your Instagram account.

Protecting Your Account

High profile users aren’t that only people at risk of having a hacked account. Hackers target any account, and if they are successful, then they could be a step closer to getting info such as addresses and credit card numbers from other Instagram users.

The first thing you should do is create a strong password. If you have a weak password or a predictable password, such as your date of birth or something that can easily relate to you, then it’s time to create a brand new password. Even with a strong password, hackers might still be able to access your account. Therefore you should take more steps to prevent a hacking.

Two Factor Authentication

This requires you to use an authentication app or your mobile phone to access your account every single time you user a new device to log in. Scammers are often deterred as a result. META provides this service, and it is very easy to set it up.

Review Login Activity

Every now and then you should go to the security section of the Instagram app to review your login activity. You’ll be able to see what devices are logged into your account, and the locations of these devices. If something looks suspicious to you, then log out from the devices you find suspicious.

Third Party Apps

There could be third party apps accessing your account. Granting third party apps access means they share content via several platforms. This is useful, but it also increases the risk of being hacked.

Hackers can get into third party apps, and from there they can steal info tied to Instagram accounts. Go to the apps and websites section of your Instagram account to see which apps have access to your account. If one of these apps are subjected to a data breach, then change your password, as well as consider revoking access from the app in question.

Auto-Save Should Be Enabled

If you end up hacked or your account is deleted, then you’ll be thankful you enabled auto-save because your photos will be saved. You can go into your settings and click on the save option. Doing this is very easy. All it takes is a few clicks of the button, and as a result you’ll backup all your photos.

What you can do if you still have access to the hacked Instagram profile

If you can still get into the cloned account, your job is much easier. The main problem is if the password was changed. Be sure to check all of the devices you use daily before you contact Instagram’s customer support directly. There are two steps to follow if you still have access to your account as outlined below.

Disable any logins to third-party websites and apps

In order to use third-party services that send or post messages, many people usually have a habit of using their Instagram and other social media accounts for faster access. The first course of action is to check which sites or apps have access to your Instagram account.

Your account might have been cloned after giving access to a third-party app or website. If you find any third-party services or apps that shouldn’t have access to your account, revoke this access immediately. It’s possible to do this via a special page that shows all the websites and apps that have access to your account’s data.

Instagram lets you see the third-party websites and apps connected to your account and revoke their access. If you suspect any form of intrusion, it’s worth getting any third-party access to your account revoked. You can then grant new authorization when you use these services again. This should help resolve the problem of a hacked Instagram account. You can also access this page from the application via the Security tab. Just click on the “Apps and Websites” menu option.

You can also check all the apps connected to your account from your smartphone app. We recommend that before you give access to your account data to applications and websites that are not part of the Meta (Facebook) platform, always read the fine print of their terms and conditions. Imagine what would happen if you agreed to have these sites send messages to all your followers.

There are lots of companies that promise their users that they will grow with simple access, and this is where the main problem lies. Understand that there are no miracles, and these companies are just looking for inattentive users so that they can clone their Instagram accounts.

Check locations where your account is logged in

To help keep users on top of all their activities on their accounts, Instagram usually sends an email when a new device is connected. This also applies when passwords are changed. For the latter, it’s possible to revert to your original password by clicking on the “revert this change” button or link provided in the email. If you would like to know where people have logged into your account, it’s good to know that Instagram always logs every new login.

Instagram also shows your account activities on a map. In case you notice a location that you’ve not been to in the past 30 or so days, just revoke access through the page itself. This way, you’ll be able to end the Instagram hack problem. To view this login activity section, navigate to settings. If you’re using the app, go to:

  • Your profile
  • Click on the three stripes icon in the upper right corner
  • Navigate to settings
  • Click on Security
  • Select “Login Activity”

What to do if you lose access to your Hacked Instagram

All is not lost. However, you have a little more work to do. This is because it’s important to prove that you actually own the cloned account. Fortunately, support for Instagram has the perfect tool for this kind of problem.

Download all your Instagram posts and photos

Since December 2017, most social media platforms allow their users to request information that has been saved since then. Currently, you can download all posts you made from December 2017 onwards in a single document through Instagram itself. In order to adhere to the General Regulation on Data Protection (GDPR), Instagram allows you to not only download the photos you’ve posted but also provides you with a list of profiles that are following you and who you follow.

The same applies to your Instagram feed post captions, Stories, likes, comments, and search history. Learn more about you can request your data here. If you’re on a PC or Mac, all you need to do is log into your account and access the page to download the content you posted, as they make it available for all their users.

Once you confirm the email they send you, you will be able to choose whether you’d like to receive the file in JSON or HTML formats, and you may need to use some specific readers or your browser to read the file. It’s also worth noting that it may take up to 48 hours for everything to be sent to the email address you confirmed. You might need to confirm your password during the process.

After everything is ready to download, you can just store the files on your computer or leave the folder saved in the email in case of an emergency. The files will be organized in a folder that’s available for download.

Keep in mind that you can also do the same process through your smartphone, though you will have to access the file request page via your browser (or paste it there) as the application no longer supports this functionality.

Enable Access PIN and 2-Step Verification

Even after you regain access to your Instagram account, the hacker might still have access to your phone number or other details. In such a case, the problem is greater, as the hacker could now start receiving all SMS and calls for password recovery accounts connected to your phone number. To recover your phone number, you may need to visit the physical store of your phone operator. However, in the meantime, a significant amount of damage can already be done.

Having a strong password is essential to avoid getting your account hacked and stolen. Always have two-factor authentication activated through the social network itself or a secure third-party service. This will require you to type a code whenever you perform a new login.

To activate this feature, go to the Privacy and Security tab from the Instagram webpage or app. A great move is to start using Google Authenticator, which essentially generates unique codes whenever someone tries to log in to your Instagram account. If you’re using an iOS or Android device, you can do this without any major problems.

Another great alternative is the Microsoft Authenticator app, which ideally works the same way as Google Authenticator, but adds an extra level of security as it requires biometric authentication to generate new passcodes. The app is available free of charge on both iOS and Android app stores.

We already published a detailed guide that covers how to enable two-factor authentication on Instagram. Click here to check it out and learn more about how you can use two-step authentication apps to secure your Instagram account.

Receiving authentication codes via SMS when you enable two-factor authentication on your account is a great step towards securing your account, but you should know that it’s not bulletproof. In any case, you should always make the necessary arrangements to have extra layers of security, especially when new logins are required.
